Burrito Tour.

So Mexican food is our new love. It took me a little while to realise it, but burritos are pretty much the most wonderful food you can eat.
First there was Dolores, in Berlin. Fantastically full burritos (labelled as vegan) packed with tofu, all the usual good stuff, and so much flavour. Plus they serve the best lemonade.

Then we tried Tortilla, in London. These are amazing. They don't offer tofu, but their guacamole is superb, and the burrito is really filling.

Next up was Jim Burrito's, in Hamburg. Jim had a separate vegan menu, which included both seitan and tofu options. It was also cooked in a different way, which made a nice change. It was also the first time I had tried chipolte sauce, and I am a total convert!

So when I won a free meal from Chilango I was excited to expand my burrito expertise. They also don't offer a tofu option for vegetarians and vegans, but all of their guacamole and vegetables are vegan. I went for a veggie burrito. With only one choice for rice (unlike Tortilla, who offer Spanish rice, and lemon and coriander rice), roasted vegetables, guacamole and either pinto beans or black beans (again, Tortilla gives you both if you opt for a vegetarian burrito).

The burrito itself came in one size- not too big, not too small. It was wrapped well and pretty stuffed with filling- but everything just lacked excitement. The guacamole had all the right spices and ingredients, but there just wasn't anything happening to make it a real zippy filling. The roasted vegetables were quite raw- maybe if you ordered a meat filled burrito, the contrast of tender meat with crunchy vegetables is lovely. But when it is your main filling, I prefer softer vegetables which, although still have a bit of a bite to them, wrap themselves around the rest of the fillings.

So all in all, I'm sorry Chilango, but you don't quite live up to your neighbour, Tortilla.

  1. Chesters in Worcester sell the best vegan mexican food I've tried. It's an omni resturant with a huge vegan selection marked on the menu. It's totally worth checking out if you're ever in this direction.

We cook mexican at home regularly. Most of the Discovery products are listed vegan on their website (enchilada seasoning/sauce is the best) and cheap at the moment.

  2. I love the Discovery range- they've just added some tortilla wraps which are chilli and jalapeno flavoured, they sound amazing!
Fajitas are a staple to our diet.

I would love to go on a Burrito Tasting Tour!

  3. Hi Artichoke Zine,
Just discovered your lovely blog via the Vegan Cake Girl site. If you are ever in Manchester you must check out Barburrito. They've just opened a branch in Liverpool too so who knows they may spread further South!

  4. Hello!
I hope that Barburrito does spread into London, the more burrito places the better!
I wish we had some that did tofu or any kind of meat replacement. It just makes them a bit different!
